Every year, as the temperatures drop and the longest night of the year arrives, hundreds of brave locals and visitors gather in Canberra for the iconic Winter Solstice Nude Charity Swim — a wildly unique event that has become a much-loved tradition. Held before sunrise on the winter solstice, participants strip down and sprint into the icy waters of Lake Burley Griffin in a celebration of community, freedom, body positivity, and pure adrenaline. What started as a quirky local challenge has evolved into one of Canberra’s most talked-about winter events, drawing people of all ages who come together to embrace the cold, laugh at the madness of it all, and support a good cause in the process. Despite the freezing conditions, the atmosphere is warm, supportive, and surprisingly uplifting, with costumes, music, cheering crowds, and a real sense of camaraderie filling the lakeside in the dark hours before dawn.
Beyond the shock value, the swim has developed a strong reputation for promoting inclusivity, confidence, and connection. The event is deeply tied to the naturist idea that bodies of all shapes, sizes, and ages should be celebrated rather than hidden, and many first-time participants describe the experience as liberating and empowering. For some, it’s about ticking something unforgettable off the bucket list; for others, it’s become an annual ritual marking resilience, renewal, and stepping outside their comfort zone. Wrapped in beanies, robes, and blankets after the swim, participants often stay around to share hot drinks, stories, and laughter as the sun rises over the nation’s capital — proving that even in the middle of Canberra’s brutal winter, community spirit can make the cold feel worth it.

Held in the depths of a Tasmanian winter as part of the legendary Dark Mofo festival, the Dark Mofo Nude Solstice Swim has become one of Australia’s most iconic and visually striking events. Before dawn on the winter solstice, thousands of participants gather silently along the shores of the River Derwent in Hobart, stripping down together before charging into the near-freezing water as the first light breaks across the horizon. Equal parts art installation, endurance challenge, ritual, and celebration of the human body, the swim captures everything Dark Mofo is known for — confronting discomfort, embracing vulnerability, and creating unforgettable shared experiences. What began as a small artistic expression has exploded into an internationally recognised event, drawing visitors from all over Australia and beyond who want to be part of something raw, surreal, and deeply communal.
Despite the dramatic imagery and icy conditions, the atmosphere surrounding the swim is incredibly energising and inclusive. The experience strips away social barriers just as literally as clothing, creating a rare sense of equality and connection among complete strangers. For many participants, it becomes far more than just a quick dip in cold water — it’s a symbolic reset, a celebration of courage, body freedom, and stepping fully into the moment. Wrapped in towels and winter coats afterward, swimmers gather laughing, shivering, and sharing stories as Hobart slowly wakes around them. Against the backdrop of bonfires, dark art, music, and the moody energy of Dark Mofo itself, the nude swim has become a bucket-list experience that perfectly captures the festival’s spirit of chaos, humanity, and transformation.

International Skinny Dip Day is a worldwide celebration of body freedom, connection, and confidence, held each year on the second Saturday of July. What began as a simple invitation to embrace naturism has grown into a global movement, with beaches, rivers, pools, and private spaces across the world hosting organised dips and informal gatherings. The day encourages people of all backgrounds, shapes, and sizes to experience the liberating feeling of swimming without barriers, while promoting positive body image, self-acceptance, and a deeper connection to nature. Whether it’s your first time or part of an ongoing lifestyle, the focus is on inclusivity, respect, and shared experience rather than anything performative.
Across the globe, communities mark the occasion in their own way — from large, coordinated events to small groups of friends heading to a quiet stretch of coastline. Many gatherings are linked to naturist organisations and often support charitable causes or awareness campaigns around mental health and body positivity. Beyond the simple act of a swim, the day represents a broader shift toward embracing authenticity and letting go of social pressures around appearance. For many participants, it’s a powerful and memorable moment — one that blends fun, vulnerability, and a surprising sense of unity with others doing the exact same thing around the world.
